PEG 40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil is a polyethylene glycol (PEG) derivative of castor oil that serves as a multifunctional emulsifier, surfactant, and foam booster. Castor oil is obtained via cold pressing the seeds of the Rincinus communis plant followed by clarification of the oil by heat, which eliminates toxic enzymes and allows the oil to be used safely. PEG 40 Castor Oil is a slightly viscous amber colored liquid. In some industries it may go by the name of PEG 2000, with 2000 indicating the average molecular weight.

Polyethylene glycols (PEGs) are a mixture of polymers combined with glycol to form a thick liquid. In cosmetics they function as emollients (which help soften and lubricate the skin), as emulsifiers (which help water-based and oil-based ingredients mix properly), and as a vehicle to deliver other ingredients deeper into the skin. The skin penetration effect depends upon both the specific product formulation and the overall health of the skin. PEGs produce little or no irritation on healthy skin but should be avoided on broken or damaged skin.

Products that contain PEG40 Castor Oil typically include sunscreens, shampoos & conditioners, skin moisturizers and body washes. In some formulations PEG40 makes a good replacement for polysorbates used to incorporate fragrances and oils into water-based blends. Because it can act as a fragrance solubilizer and foam booster, PEG40 may eliminate or reduce the requirement for a secondary surfactant. PEG40 is non-ionic and compatible with non-ionic, anionic, and cationic ingredients.
